Located on the ’Iolani School campus, in the heart of Honolulu, Residence Hall is home to 112 students in Grades 9 to 12. The dorm units are arranged around an alcove, promoting interactions between students, while also capturing panoramic views of Diamond Head and Waikiki. In order to save a large, 65-year-old monkeypod tree, the building’s footprint was designed in an “L” shape, subsequently creating a courtyard for all students to enjoy.

Constructed in 1916, Elks Temple served as the primary place for the Elks, a fraternal club, to gather in Tacoma until 1966. After several changes of ownership and suffering almost 40 years of abandonment and neglect, the property was acquired and restored by McMenamins. It reopened in 2019 as an entertainment hub that features 45 hotel rooms, three restaurants, five bars, a concert venue, and flexible event space.

Two angled “cabin-like” buildings are connected by sky bridges at every level and create a concave backdrop to the adjacent Cascade Park. The large green roof, urban agriculture, and a tree-filled courtyard with a pond and fog mister support the concept of a forest retreat.
